To talk about shopping for clothes:

¿Encontró lo que buscaba?
Did you find what you were looking for?

Quería un vestido rojo, pero no encontré ninguno.
I wanted a red dress, but I didn’t find any.

No iba a comprar zapatos, pero estaban en oferta.
I wasn’t going to buy shoes, but they were on sale.

Using Imperfect and Preterite together

Preterite: action in the past with specific beginning and end
Imperfect: set scene; how things used to be; describe ongoing action in past

Together:

Mientras miraba en el espejo, el dependiente me trajo el vestido.

Los niños corrían detrás de la caja cuando entré en la tienda.

Buscaba los jeans mientras mi amiga compró el suéter.

This week in Spanish:
We learned how to talk about shopping for clothes.
A employee could ask if you found what you were looking for.
¿Encontraste lo que buscabas?
A possible response would be:
No había en mi número.
No iba a comprar los pantalones, pero me dieron un descuento.
Also we learned about using the imperfect and preterite to talk about the past in the same sentence.
Use the imperfect to talk about situations in the past. The imperfect doesn’t say anything about when the situation began or ended.
Los pantalones costaban demasiado.
Use the preterite to talk about an event that began or ended while something else was going on.
No compramos los pantalones porque costaban demasiado.
Nosotros caminábamos por la calle pero cuando vimos la pintura paramos.

This week, we reviewed details of El Día de los Muertos.
Some facts include:
•Many flowers are used, especially marigold, to decorate altars and graves.
•Mexican People decorate altars with flowers and specific and general gifts important to that person. These gifts try to attract the person to the altar.
•There is a large variety of food, especially food that was a favorite of the deceased.
•The celebration starts the evening of October 31 and lasts until November 2.
•There are many painted skulls/skeletons, pictures, candles, fruit, and incense to attract dead.
•It is a festival that happens once a year.
•It is a happy time, not a sad or scary time.
•Families of the deceased have picnics at the grave sites.
• There can be parades.
•Memorials are held at the families houses that are held around the altars created for the dead.
•Papel picado is a tissue paper banner with very intricate designs cut into it that are hung for parties.

We also learned to talk about shopping for clothes.
•¿Encontraste lo que buscabas? (Did you find what you were looking for?)
•Quería unas chancletas, pero no había en mi número. (I wanted some flip-flops, but there weren't any in my size.)
•No iba a comprar…, pero me dieron un descuento. (I wasn't going to buy…, but they gave me a discount.)
•Vi que las carteras estaban en oferta, así que compré dos. (I saw wallets were on sale, so I bought two.)

Next, we learned about how to use the imperfect and preterite tenses in the same sentence and how to distinguish them.
•They are both past tenses.
•The imperfect is used to talk about situations that have already happened, such as what things were like or what was going on.
•The imperfect is very general, there is no specific time involved.
•The word "cuando" is a direct giveaway when to use the preterite tense.
•The preterite tense taks about an event that began or ended while something else was going on or interrrupted the situation.
•In this sentence, "No compramos los jeans porque costaban demasiado." it is saying we didn't buy they jeans because they cost too much. "We didn't buy the jeans" is the imperfect tense because there is no specific time, and "they cost too much" is the preterite tense because it is interrupting the jean-buying because they did not have enough money, so they couldn’t buy the jeans.
•There are some cases where the preterite tense will be used before the imperfect tense.
•Also, there can be sentences where two preterite verbs may be used while no imperfect verbs are used.
•A sentence using the imperfect and preterite tenses describing the picture on page 285 is: La gente caminó en el mercao, mientras los dependientes viendían sus arte.

This week in our Spanish 3 class we learned the Gramática en acción 1 de Capítulo 8 and El Día de los Muertos. The imperfect and preterite: Saying what was in progress is what we practiced in class.
The rules:
· Both the imperfect and the preterite are past tenses that can be used in the same sentence.
· Use the imperfect to talk about situations in the past, such as what things were like or what was going on.
· The imperfect does NOT say anything about when the situation began or ended.
Some examples of the imperfect:
1. Las señoritas caminaban en la calle.
2. Los vestidos eran comodos.
3. Lisa iba de compras.
4. Las camisas hacían juego con los jeans.
5. Los zapatos costaban demasiado.
· Use the preterite to talk about an event that began or ended while something else was going on, or that interrupted what was in progress.
Some examples of the imperfect and preterite:
1. Rita entró en la tienda, Tito jugaba.
2. Me compré la minifalda porque le quedaba comoda.
3. Yo fui a un solo lugar y encontraba.
4. Bella compré la bufanda mientras yo comía.
5. Maria se probó vestido, pero le quedaba apretado.
El Día de los Muertos
· Celebrates the lives of the dead
· Celebrated in Mexico from Oct. 31-Nov.2
· They decorate las ofrendas (alters) and tombstones of their deceased loved ones with their favorite things, incense, and marigolds.
· They decorate skeletons colorfully
· It comes from the Aztec culture
· The ofrendas are supposed to draw the spirits back with a path
· There is a procession to the cemetery
· It is a very family orientated event
· Party with food, music, and dance at the cemetery.

Using the Imperfect and the Preterite Tense to say what was in progress:

For the Preterite:
-It is used to say what happened, began, and was completed in the past; something began or ended while something else was going on or that was interrupted in progress.

Yo compré leche.
-I bought milk

El profesor dijo que el examen fue fácil.
-The professor said the test was easy.

Yo comí la cena con mi familia.
-I ate dinner with my family.

For the Imperfect:

-It is used to set the scene, to tell a story, or to tell how things used to be or what other people used to like or be like. There is no set beginning or end.

-De niña, me encantaba los dulces.
-When I was a little girl, I loved sweets.

Cuando mi mama era niña, ella jugaba a la casita.
-When my mom was a little girl, she placed house.

Mi abuelo jugaba a las damas.
-My grandfather used to play checkers.

The imperfect and preterite can both be used in the same sentence. There needs to be an ongoing action and an interrupting action.

-Nosotros caminábamos por la calle, pero cuando vimos la pintura, paramos a verlo.
We were walking on the street, but when we saw the painting, we stopped to look at it.

-Margarita fue al mercado. Buscaba los vegetales y las frutas.
Margarita went to the market. She was looking for vegetables and fruits.

-Cuando la familia Rodríguez comían, el teléfono sonó.
When the Rodriguez family was eating, the telephone rang.

-Cuando fue al centro comercial, había muchos descuentos.
When I went to the mall, there were many discounts.

-Yo leía un libro, y mi hermano lo tomó de yo.
I was reading a book, and my brother took it from me.

-Nosotros jugábamos al pilla-pilla, pero empezó llorar y el juego terminó.
We were playing tag, but it started to rain, and the game ended.

To begin the week, we reviewed all the new vocabulary we learned last week. The new vocabulary we reviewed describes clothing and how it fits using the verbs quedar (le), and verse. After finalizing the vocabulary, we began on using the imperfect with the preterite. This is used when an ongoing event in the past is interrupted by a specific event.

For example:
Yo iba al centro comercial cuando el niño empezó a llorar.
Mi madre compró una camisa mientras yo era a la practica de fútbol.

Finally, due to the Mexican holiday, Dia de los Muertos, approaching, we began to study what it was. Dia de los Muertos is a Mexican holiday that commemorates those who have died. This is a happy celebration, usually lasting two days, includes the deceased’s favorite foods and drinks. Also, this Mexican holiday includes papel picado which is tissue paper cut up with many beautiful designs in it.

use the imperfect to talk about what things were like and what happened. the imperfect doesn't state a beginning or end.

the preterite is used when you have a beginning and an end, or while something else is going on, or is being interrupted

This week we continued to learn about shopping.
When talking about shopping for clothes someone would say:
¿Encontraste lo que buscabas? In order to ask – did you find what you were looking for?
In reply someone might say: Querīa la minifalda, pero no hace juego con camisa. In order to say I wanted a mini-skirt, but it does not match with my shirt.
While shopping someone might also say: No iba comprar el cinturōn, pero me dieron un descuento. In order to say: I wasn’t going to buy the belt, but they gave me a discount.
To ask how you look in a dress someone would say – ¿Como me veo con esta vestido? To answer by saying it’s too tight someone would say – El vestido es muy apretado.
To ask where the dressing rooms are someone would say - ¿Donde estā los probadores?

We also went over using the imperfect and preterite when saying what was in progress. They can be used in the same sentence. The imperfect is used when talking about situations in the past, such as what things were like, or what was going on but not when a situation began or ended. The preterite can be used to talk about an event that began or ended while something else was going on, or that interrupted what was in progress.
Some examples of using both the imperfect and preterite tense in the same sentence are as follows:
Cuando ellos estaron comiendo, la amiga la amiga dijo que cuando tenīa ocho aňos, ella gustaba saltar a la cuerda.
A ella le gustô la ropa de Old Navy, asī que iba allī.
No compramos la camisita porque estaban muy apretado.

This week we started the first grammar section of chapter eight. We learned that the preterite and imperfect tenses which both talk about the past can be used in the same sentence. The complicated part is learning when and how to use them properly. The imperfect tense is used to talk about a situation that didn’t abruptly begin or end. Like:
Nosotros jugabamos fútbol.-We were playing football.
Debbie quería los perros..- Debbie liked dogs.
The preterite tense talks about a situation that began and while something else was going on (the imperfect)-
Nosotros jugabamos fútbol cuando Eugene cayó.- We were playing football when Sam fell.
Debbie quería los perros así ella compró uno.- Debbie liked dogs, so she bought one.
They does not always have to have one imperfect and one preterite verb, they depending on the context of the sentence.

In Spanish class the past week, we went over a review between the differences of the imperfect tense and the preterite and when both tenses are used. The preterite is used when an action is completed or implied that there was a start and finish.
Arianna conversadó con la profesora.

Majority of the time, the imperfect tense is not seen to be as an action that was completed or specific. There is no definite beginning or end.
Las muchachas hablaban en inglés.

How do the shoes fit?
Me quedan muy apretados.

Example #2: ¿Qué te parece este color?

Queria unas camisas largas, pero estaba flojas.
I wanted long sleeve shorts, but they were too big.
No iba a comprar dos zapatos, pero me dieron un descuento.
I wasn’t going to buy the shoes, but they gave me a discount.

Imperfect and preterite: Saying what is in progress.

1. Both the imperfect and preterite are tenses used in the past.
2. The imperfect is used to talk about situations in the past, such as what things were like or what was going on.
Ex: Los zapatos costaban desmasiado.
The jeans cost too much.
3. the pereterite is used to talk about an event that began and ended while something else was going on, or that interrupted what was in progress.

This week we talked about using the preterite and the imperfect together.

The imperfect is used to talk about a sitiation or condition that was happening, or an ongoing event in the past.

The preterite is used to talk about an interrupting action, or a specific action in the past.

Cuando la profesora hablaba, los estudiantes escribieron.
-When the teacher talked, the students wrote.

Los niños estaban jugando cuando los padres gritaron.
-The kids were playing when the parents yelled.

El perro comía cuando el gato bebió.
-The dog ate while the cat drank.

We also talked about El Día de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead. The Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday celebrated on November 1st and 2nd. It is a day when the people of Mexico create altars, or ofrendas,to their dead loved ones. They also decorate gravestones and make their dead loved one's favorite foods and drinks. There are many flowers and candles, and some parades. People have small picnics at their dead loved one's graves, and it's a day of remembrance and reflection.
