Español 3- El Diario del 14-Sept-2009 a 18-Sept-2009

In this post, please write your journal entry for this week. In it, you should describe all material that was covered in class this week. Include explanations of concepts, definitions of words, vocabulary lists, and examples.

Use the notes you took in class to guide you. Please DO NOT copy directly from the text. Write out explanations in your own words and make up your own examples.

Please DO NOT write directly in the blog response space. Type all text using Microsoft Word first, then copy and paste in into the blog response space. Be appropriate Spanish punctuation when necessary-accents, tildes, question marks, etc. Be careful with spelling-use your text as a reference for spelling.

Please talk to me (in person, via email) if you have any questions/concerns about this assignment.

Your journal entry will be due Friday, September 18th by 11:30 pm. It will be worth 20 points. Remember that if you submit late, you will receive half credit.

El Diario

During this week we studied chapter seven. This chapter had to deal with food and things you would say when you go to a restaurant. Some words we learned are: un surtido de frutas frescas, la piña, el plátano, la lechuga, la pera, los bocadillos, las fresas, los mariscos, el aceite de oliva, la ensalada mixta, and el vinagre. Some phrases are: Triganos la cuenta (bring us the bill). The answer to that statement would be Por supuesto, enseguida se la traigo (Of course, I’ll bring it to you right away). A question you can ask is, ¿Qué nos recomienda para cenar? (What do you recommend we have for dinner). To answer that you would say: pues, el plato del día está muy saroso. Se lo recomiendo. Es carne asada con platoons (well, the daily special is very good. I recommend it. it’s roast beef with plantains). We also learned about double object pronouns. Some verbs like recomendar, dejar, and pedir have both a direct object and an indirect object. The indirect object pronoun always comes before the direct object. An example is: El cocinero está preparándonosla. That is what we learned this week.

This week in Spanish class we learned the vocabulary for a restaurant and some food that might be on that menu. Some of the things that could be in a menu included:
• caldo de pollo
• sopa de fideos
• bistec a la parrilla chuletas de cerdo con habichuelas
• la ensalada mixta
• las fresas
• flan de vainilla
• la lechuga
• los mariscos
• los bocadillos
• la pera
• agua mineral
• gazpacho

We also learned the various questions that you could ask a waiter (el mesero). Asking the waiter to bring you the menu would be ¿Nos trae el menú, por favor? Asking the waiter what he/she would recommend for have dinner is ¿Qué nos recomienda para cenar? Finally to tell the waiter to bring the bill you would say, Tráiganos la cuenta, por favor.

Along with that we learned how to ask how food taste, you can ask this with the questions ¿Qué tal está el/la (comida)? or ¿Probaste el/la (comida)? meaning how’s the (food)? Or did you try the (food)? To these questions you cloud answer with the following Le falta ___, no te la recomiendo. Está ___.

Along with vocab we also learned double object pronouns. These double object pronouns are used when asking for help or asking for a favor. These type of sentences often will need the use of both a direct object pronoun and an indirect object pronoun.
EX: Can you bring me my homework? Can you bring me it?
¿Puedes traerme mi tarea? ¿Puedes traérmela?

When using the indirect object pronouns le, la, los, or las with the direct object pronouns lo, la, los, or las, you must change them to se.
EX: Did you give Sarah the present? Yes I gave it to her.

We began chapter 7 by discussing some food vocabulary

La cuenta- the bill
La propina- the tip

We used this vocabulary, along with others phrases to order food in a restaurant setting.

EX: .¿Qué hay el especial hoy?
EX: El caldo de pollo es rico

We also learned how to communicate with a waiter/waitress, and how they would respond as well.

EX: Nos trae el menú, por favor
EX: Si, claro. ¿Se los ofrece algo más?

We learned how to ask what is good to eat, and some characteristics of that food/drink

EX: ¿Qué nos recomienda para cenar?
EX: El bistec a la parilla es muy rico.

We also learned how to describe food.

EX: ¿Qué tal están los mariscos?
EX: Le faltan sabor

The sentence asks how the seafood tastes, and it goes on to say it’s missing taste.

The final part of the week covered double object pronouns

These are commonly used with verbs such as

- Dejar
- Servir
- Traer
- Dar

EX: La mesera nos recomendó la ensalda mixta

Any time you use double object pronouns, the indirect object comes first.

In these situations, the le and les will change to se when they are used with lo/la/los/las.

EX: ¿ Le dejaron la propina al mesero?
EX: Sí, se la dejamos ahora.

When left in the infinitive form, you can attach both pronouns to the end of the verb.

EX: ¿Puede traenosla?

Translated: Can you bring it to us?

In the grammar section we learned about double object pronouns. Some sentences have verbs can have both indirect (me, te, le, nos, les) and direct object (usually- lo, la, los, las) pronouns. The indirect object pronoun comes before the direct object pronoun:
Te la recomiendo. I recommend it to you
Any negative words have to go in front of both of them:
No te la recomienda. I don’t recommend it to you.
When le and les are used they change to se to avoid confusion.
Se la recomienda. I recommend it to her.
With some verb forms like the infinative form the double object pronouns can be attached to the end:
Debes recomendársela. You should recommend it to her.

This week our Spanish three class learned a lot of vocabulary on food, how to order in a restaurant, and ways to express the taste of food. Some examples of food we learned are:
· La pera- pear
· Los mariscos-shellfish
· El plátano- plantain
· Las fresas- strawberries
· La ensalada mixta- mixed salad
A way we learned to ask how something taste is, “¿Qué tal está la comida?
Some responses we learned were “Le falta sal/sabor/no se qué.” Which “le falta” means it is missing something such as salt or flavor.
To ask if someone has tried a dish is, “¿Probaste el helado de piña?”
Some other vocabulary we learned for using in a restaurant was:
· El/la mesero(a)- the waiter
· La propina- the tip
· La cuenta- the bill
· El menu- the menu
· El restaurante- the restaurant
· Las sopas- soups
· Las bebidas- drinks
· Los postres- desserts
· El plato del día- the special of the day
The grammar part of this week was very challenging to me. The dealing with double object pronouns was the grammar we learned this week, which is very common in ordering food at a restaurant. The direct object is the thing (food in this instance) and the indirect object is the person receiving the food. The indirect object pronoun is always first. When using both direct and indirect object pronouns in a sentence they make an unbreakable unit. In a sentence where le or les is used before lo or la you change the indirect object pronouns to se, this making it sounds more appropriate. Some examples of double object pronouns are:
1. ¿Nos trae el menu?
Sí, en un momento selo traigo.
2. Quiero la cuenta por favor.
¿Puedes traermela?
3. ¿Debo traer la sopa?
Sí, traetela por favor.
4. ¿Quieres el helado?
Sí, pídemelo.

Chapter Seven is called ¡Buen provecho! In English this means “Good Eats.” So far, we have learned how to order in a restaurant, some of food vocabulary, how to say someone recommends something or they don’t like it, and how food tastes.
1. Some of the food vocabulary we learned are:
• la pera, el plátano, las fresas, la piña, y un surtido de frutas frescas
• los bocadillos, los mariscos, la ensalada mixta, el aceite de olive, y el vinagre
• caldo de pollo, sopa de fideos, sopa de ajo, y gazpacho
• Pollo asado con gandules, bistec a la parrilla, bistec encebollado, y chuletas de
• cerdo con habichuelas
• agua mineral, café, té
• flan de vainilla y fresas con crema
2. To say you and your party want a menu and the waiter says he/she will bring it you say:
• ¿Nos trae el menu, por favor? Sí, inmediatamente se lo traigo.
3. To ask what is recommended for dinner, you can say:
• ¿Qué nos recomienda para cenar?
4. To say that the daily special is very good and what it is, you can say;
• El plato del día está muy sabroso. Se lo recomiendo. Es pollo asado con gandules.
5. To tell the waiter to bring the bill and the waiter says he/she will bring it, you say:
• Tráiganos la cuenta, por favor. Por supuesto. Enseguida se la traigo.
6. To ask how a food, is you can say:
• ¿Qué tas está el bistec?
7. To say it is missing salt, you say:
• Le falta sal.
8. To ask someone if they tried the gazpacho, you say:
• ¿Probaste la sopa de ajo?
9. To recommend something, you say:
• Recomiéndotela el bistec porque está en su punto.
10. To say you don’t recommend something, you can say:
• No te la recomiendo porque está le falta no sé qué.
11. We also learned about direct object pronouns. Verbs regularly used in this chapter such as recomendar, servir, and traer may have a direct object and an indirect object. Because of this, there will be a direct and an indirect object pronoun in the sentence as well. The indirect object pronoun comes before the object pronoun always. When there is a command in the sentence, whether it is positive or negative will effect where the object pronouns will go. If the command is positive, the object pronouns are attached to the end and an accent mark will appear on the vowel of the original word that previously had an accent. If there is a negative command, the object pronouns will come before the conjugated verb. Also, another important rule to remember is that when you have “le” or “les” as your indirect object pronoun, if the direct object pronoun is lo/la or los/las, then the direct object pronoun must be changed to “se” because it would be less awkward to say “Sí, ya se la dejamos” than to say “Sí, ya le la dejamos.”

Double Object Pronouns
When asking for help or request a favor it is common to use more than one object pronoun, then you have direct and indirect objects. The indirect object always comes before the direct object.
Direct object pronouns are: Me, te, lo/la, nos, os, los/las they stand for people or things that directly receive the action of the verb.
Indirect object pronouns are: me, te, le, nos, os, les they stand for people for whom or to shom and action is done.
Examples:
¿La piña? El mesero no me lo trajo nunca.
¿El helado? Se lo trae a tus abuelos
Vamos a dejar se la.
