Español 2- El Diario del 21-Sept-2009 a 25-Sept-2009

In this post, please write your journal entry for this week. In it, you should describe all material that was covered in class this week. Include explanations of concepts, definitions of words, vocabulary lists, and examples.

Use the notes you took in class to guide you. Please DO NOT copy directly from the text. Write out explanations in your own words and make up your own examples.

Please DO NOT write directly in the blog response space. Type all text using Microsoft Word first, then copy and paste in into the blog response space. Be appropriate Spanish punctuation when necessary-accents, tildes, question marks, etc. Be careful with spelling-use your text as a reference for spelling.

Please talk to me (in person, via email) if you have any questions/concerns about this assignment.

Your journal entry will be due Sunday, September 27th by 11:30 pm. It will be worth 20 points. Remember that if you submit late, you will receive half credit.

this week we continued in Chapter 7..

We learned about double object pronouns with commands. With commands you attach both to the end of the verb and place an accent mark over the stressed syllable.

Ex.- Es bistec a la parrilla. Recomièndaselo.

With negative commands, the pronoun comes before the verb, with the indirect pronoun first.

Ex.- Miguel quiere copiar tu tarea. ¡No se las des!

Also we learned about adverbs. Adverbs modify vers, adjectives, or other adverbs. They tell how much , how, how well, or when. In english adverbs usually have an -ly ending, in Spanish, in exchange for the -ly we use -mente. If the adverb has a feminine form, you must make it feminine before adding -mente.

Ex.-
afortunadamente - luckily
generalmente - generally
lentamente - slowly
rápidamente - rapidly
típicamente - tipically
ruidosamente - loudly

Generalmente cenamos en casa a las seis.

Afortunadamente, la cafetería del colegio es excelente.
Adverbs that have one form usually masculine you just add -mente right to the end of the adverb.

Ex,:
fácilmente - easily
nerviosamente - nervously

there are also words that do not have -mente at the end of the word but are still adverbs

Ex:
bastante- really
bien- well
casi- almost
mucho- alot
muy- very
nunca- never
despuès- after
luego- later
más- more
mejor- best
poco- a lil bit
siempre- always
peor- poorly;worse
ya- already done something
demasiado- too much

In Spanish two this week we focused on present tense of regular –er, -ar, and –ir verbs and the correct way to conjugate them. We also learned household chores and the correct way to say them as well as begin forming a sentence with them. –Er verbs are conjugated very similar to –ar verbs. –Er verbs how ever are conjugated the same way as hablar. The o-ue verbs are conjugated very differently, if it not conjugated the right way the means will be changed a hundred percent of the time. Nosotros and vosotros verb forms never change!!!!
A few examples or sentences made out of an –er verb are. Yo Como

Spaghetti – I eat spaghetti. Or ¿comes carne? - Do you eat meat? Examples of the –ar verbs are…yo hablo español, and no habla español.

Comer (to eat)
Yo-como
Tu-comes
El, ella, ud. -come
Nosotros-comemos
Ellos, ellas, uds-comen
Hablar (to talk)
yo- hablo
Tú̀- hablas
El, ella, ud- habla
Nosotros –hablamos
Ellos, ellas, usds- hablan

Probar (to try/to taste)
Yo- puebo
Tu- pruebas
El, ella, ud-prueba
Nosotros- probamos
Ellos, ellas, uds- prueban

Reflexive pronouns must refer to the same person as the subject pronoun for example..yo me levanto acuesto tarde. Or mi perro se levanta temprano. The reflexive pronouns are (yo)- me (you)- te (he, she they) se (nosotros) nos and plural forms are se as well.

Many household chores are quite simply dedicated to one room where as others such as chores being done in the living room or bathroom could be interchangeable by simply changing a word or two. Phrases often associated with the living room are as follows. Arreglar la sala witch means to straighten up the living room. Also pasar la aspiradora witch literally means to move / pass the vacume.
Words often associated with the kichen are poner La Mesa witch means to set the table and preparar la cena witch means to prepare dinner. Bathroom chores consist of limpiar el bana, and arreglar el bana. These are just a few examples of things that could be used in each room however these are not the only chores that can me done in those rooms. A few extra chores are lavar los platos- wash the dishes. Sacar la basura- take out the garbage. To ask how you can help someone you must say …..¿ Puedo ayudarte?
To ask if there is anything else that needs to be done you must say…. ¿ Que mas?
A few new vocab words were also introduced this week. They were debes- you should and No to olvides –do not forget.

This week in class, we learned about stem changing and reflexive verbs and vocabulary about chores and jobs around the house.
Stem changing verbs do not change in the nosotros form. Some verbs with e à I stem changes are:
·Pedir = pido, pides, pide, pedimos, piden
·Servir = sirvo, sirves, sirve, servimos, sirven
Reflexive verbs include pronouns along with the conjugated verb. The pronoun comes first. They are me, te, se, nos, and se.
·Levantarse: me levanto, te levantas, se levanta, nos levantamos, se levantan
Some reflexive verbs are stem changers too. Conjugate the verb the same, just not in nosotros. Other reflexive verbs are: banarse, ponerse, afietarse, secarse, and lavarse.
·Acostarse(ue) = me acuesto, te acuestas, se acuesta, nos acostamos, se acuestan
Another reflexive stem changer is despertarse(ie).
Still some others verbs are irregular in the yo form.
·Venir- vengo
·Poner- pongo
·Salir- salgo
·Traer- traigo
·Hacer- hago
·Saber- sé
·Tener- tengo
The vocabulary we learned this week was on chores and things around the house.

Español 2: Diario del 21-Sept-2009 a 25-Sept-2009

This week we covered the Present Tense of regular verbs, learned more about stem-changing verbs, irregular verbs, reflexive verbs and some new vocabulary.

Present Tense of Regular Verbs

Subject AR ER IR
Yo O O O
Tú AS ES ES
Él/Ella/Ud A E E
Nosotros(as) AMOS EMOS IMOS
Ellos/Ellas/Uds AN EN EN

Example of how to conjugate a verb for each subject:

CORRER:
Yo corro
Tú corres
Ella corre
Nosotros corremos
Ellos corren

Example of how to use present tense verbs in a sentence:

Sara y Mari montan los bicicletas.
(Sara and Mari ride bikes)

Yo camino en la mañana.
(I walk in the morning)

When conjugating a present tense verb, you look at the subject (who is performing the action) and then you look at the ending of the verb (AR, ER, or IR). From there you can figure out how to conjugate the verb.

Stem-Changing Verbs

There are some verbs in Spanish that have stem-changes when you conjugated them as well.

O → UE
Probar
Almorzar
Dormir
Poder
Volver

E → IE
Empezar
Pensar
Querer
Preferir

U → UE
Jugar

**STEM CHANGING VERBS CHANGE IN EVERY FORM EXCEPT THE NOSOTROS FORM**

EXAMPLES:

Pruebo
Almuerzas
Empieza
Juegan

Ellos no quieren hacer la tarea.
Alex prueba las frutas.

Present Tense Stem-Changed E → IE

Pedir
Servir

Works the same as other stem-changers. You DO NOT change the stem in the nosotros form.

EXAMPLES:

Yo pido las papas fritas y el agua.

Ella sirve las frutas.

Irregular Present Tense YO FORM Verbs

There are some verbs in the present tense that have irregular yo forms. They are:

Salir = Salgo
Poner = Pongo
Hacer = Hago
Traer = Traigo
Saber = Sé
Venir = Vengo
Tener = Tengo

So if you are tryinig to say “I have to go out with my friends” you would say

Yo salgo con mis amigos.

MORE EXAMPLES:
Yo no tengo hemanos.
Yo hago la tarea siempre.

Never conjugate the YO form normally with those specific verbs.

Reflexive Pronouns

Some verbs in Spanish are reflexive (the action is being done to the subject), you know when a verb is reflexive because ‘se’ is attached to the infinitive.
First, figure out the subject. Then, pick the correct pronoun:

Yo - Me
Tú - Te
Él/Ela/Ud - Se
Nosotros(as) - Nos
Ello/Ellos/Uds - Se

Then, conjugate the verb normally and put the pronoun before the conjugated verb.

EXAMPLES:

Yo me levanto tarde.
Mi perro se acuesta todos los días.
Nosotros nos levantamos por la mañana.

The textbook mentions some vacation spots that I would like to mention. The first one was “visitar un museo” which mean visit the museum. I would like to make a chart to show the rest.
Pasear en bote Ride a boat/boat ride
Conocer el centro Get to know the city
Ir de compras al mercado Shop in the market
Ir al zoolόgico Go to the zoo

You can ask a question by saying ¿Pudeo ayudarte?-Can I help you?
To deal with asking what to do in a particular room you can ask ¿Qué hay que hacer en la concina? Or you can replace cocina with any other room. Examples)la sala, el baño,la cocina, and el patio.
Another common question is ¿Qué más tengo que hacer?-What else do I have to do?
Or ¿Algo más?-anything else?

In Spanish class this week, we learned how to use the present tense of e to I, irregular verbs, and reflexive pronouns.
Example of e to i present tense verbs with regular present tense endings:
Servir

Examples of these verbs would be:

This week in Spanish class we learned many new things. One of the first things we learned this week was hoe to conjugate regular verbs according to there subject. An example would be nosotros (hablar) ______ en la casa. The correct way to conjugate this would be for the verb hablar to look like this hablamos because of the subject nosotros you would have to agree with it. Another thing we learned was some stem changing verbs that change when conjugated. For example hacer the yo form is hago. Other things we learned we besides to conjugate verbs, was to make the verb agree with the subject , at the end of the week we also learned some household chores and hoow to say them in Spanish. Then finally we learned how to conjugate irregular forms of verbs as well.

Over this week are class learned a lot of new verbs. Most of the verbs dealt with what could be done inside of a home. For example,

• Limpiar- To clean
• Limpian el bano- To clean the bathroom
• Prepara la cena- To prepare dinner
• Décor el patio- To clean the patio
• Sacar la basura- To take out the trash
• Cortar es Césped- To cut the grass

Those verbs can be done in four different places of a home
• La Sala- The living room
• La Cocina- The kitchen
• La Bano- The bathroom
• El Patio- The patio

We also continued to work with conjugating verbs, and creating sentences using those verbs.
