Using the preterite and imperfect to begin a story
Preterite
• talk about what happened on a specific occasion
• sequence of events
• a change or a reaction to something
• an event that began or ended while something else was going on
Imperfect
• say what people, places, things were generally like
• set the scene
• explain the circumstances surrounding an event
• say what was going on when something else happened
Telling a story in the past requires both these tenses. When unsure of what tense to use, the above list is a good reminder.
To begin a story use these words:
• Érase una vez…
• Había una vez…
• Hace unos (muchos, cinco…) años
These preterite words tell what happened:
• De repente
• En seguida
• Un día
Events that happen over and over again are imperfect.
To continue a story, use the phrases:
• Fue cuando
• Entonces
• Luego
• Después
To end a story, use the phrases:
• Por fin
• Al final
• Vivieron felices para siempre
• Así fue que
Some famous fairytales that have been examples include:
• La historia de Cenicienta
• Ricitos de Oro y los tres osos
• La historia de Blancanieves
This is an example mini story:
Érase una vez había un chico. Iba a caminaba en el bosque. De repente, vio un oso. Se di mucho miedo y huir. Por fin llegó en su casa y no camimar en el bosque.
Vocabulario en Acción 2
La Actividades
• Pescar
• Acampar (hacer camping)
• Volar con ala delta
• Remar
• Explorar cuevas
• Tirarse al agua
• Hacer windsurf
• Observar la naturaleza
• Hacer ecoturismo
• Bucear
Las cosas
Camping
• La ceña de pescar
• El pez (los peces) (swimming only)
• La orilla del (lago)
• La linterna
• Las gafas/lentes de sol
• Los binóculos
• La tienda de acampar (acampaña)
• La crema protectora
• La fogata

La costa
• La arena
• La ballena
• El caracol
• La marea (baja o alta)
• Las olas
• El tiburón
• El mar
• El balón de playa
• Una isla tropical

The future tense is used often when talking about what you are going to do on vacation. Ir + a + infinitive is commonly used, especially when future plans are definite. When unsure or hopeful if something will happen, the future tense is used.
Ex:
• Voy a explorer cuevas.
• Vas a volar con ala delta.
• Vamos a hacer windsurf.
• En el lago, no se permitás ir de pesca. Tendrás que ir al río.
• Nosotros iremos a la playa la semana próximo.
• Alejandra estará contenta porque está aprendiendo a hacer windsurf.

To wonder out loud, the future tense is used because the information is not yet been decided for sure.
Ex:
• ¿Cómo sera el clima en la costa? ¿Hará mucho viento? ¿Habrá olas grandes?
• Ya encontré mis zapatos. ¿Dónde estarán mis binóculos?
• Mañana voy a Florida. Espero que el viaje sea divertido.
On a side note, the feast of Our Lady of Guadaloupe was celebrated on Saturday 12. Special Mass celebrations were available at various churches.

This week, we finished Gramática 1, went over the second vocabulary section, and started working on the future tense.

Using the preterite and imperfect to begin a story:

To start a story, use the imperfect forms of verbs.

érase una vez...-once upon a time..
Había una vez...-There once was...
Hace unos (muchos, cinco...) años -A few (many, five...) years ago..

After the scene has been set using the imperfect, use the preterite to say what happened.

Había una vez una chica muy bonita se llemaba Cenicienta. Un día, ella estaba muy triste. De repente, llegó su hado madrina...

Preterite and imperfect to continue and end a story:

To continue a story, use these phrases:
fue cuando-that was when
entonces-so, then
luego-then, later, next
después-after, afterward

Luego, llegó una chica con hambre..

Entonces, ella entró a la casa...

To end a story, use these phrases:
por fin-finally
al final-in the end
vivieron felices para siempre-they lived happily ever after
así fue que-so that's how

Al final, la chica corrió a su casa.

La chica vivió feliz para siempre.
