The objectives for this vocabulary section are asking for and giving directions and asking for clarification.

To ask for directions you can simply say Perdón, cómo puedo llegar a la parade del metro?
That is saying excuse me, how can I get to the subway stop. To form questions like these you can use vocabulary like this…

• La zona peatonal=pedestrian zone
• La esquina=corner
• La avenida=avenue
• La acera=sidewalk
• Bajarse de=to get off of
• Subirse de=to get on to
• Parar=stop
• La carretera=road
• El semáforo=streetlight
• La autopista=highway
• La zona verde=green belt, park
• El piso=floor
• *floors of a building*
1. primero=first
2. Segundo=second
3. tercero= third
4. cuarto=fourth
5. quinto=fifth
6. sexto=sixth
7. séptimo=seventh
8. octavo=eighth
9. noveno=ninth
10. décimo=tenth
To give directions in Spanish you have to be very precise in how you word your directions such as giving the name of a street you have to drive on.

For example if I was at a hospital and I needed to get to the cathedral a good set of directions are:
• Siga derecho tres cuadras en Riverview. Dible a la drecha en el cruce de Norborne con Lola. Siga derecho uno cuadra en Lola. La cathedral es entre el acuario y el café.

Another important point about giving directions is when you need clarification. When someone is clarifying something for you they are making a statement or idea clear.

Here are some ways that you can clarify such things in Spanish.
Perdón, puede repitir lo que dijo?
Excuse me, can you repeat what you said?
Entonces, lo que tengo que hacer es
So, what I have to do is…
Otra vez, por favor?
One more time please?
Using these terms to clarify what a person just said can help you with anything, knowing your way around town or even how to get onto the highway.

During this week of La clase de espanol II we learned about la ciudad, and how to give directions. We also learned about some of the major places in la ciudad de Santo Domingo. These places include la catedral, el café internet, las oficinas, el quioscos, el supermarcado, la fabrica, el hospital, la sala de emergencias, la estacionamiento, la embajada, el puerto y el acuario. These places are important because they are places frequently visited by people, and they are places business. However these places would be useless if we didn’t know how to get to them. That’s why we have to know how to give directions. But first you need to know the parts of the city. La zona peatonal is the pedestrian zone, la avenida is an avenue, la zona verde is like a park or a garden, la autopista is a highway, or freeway, el semaforo is an intersection, la acera is the sidewalk la cuadra is a block and la carretera is a corner. Now you need to know how tell people where to go, so in order to tell someone to go straight you would say “siga adelante (or derecho) dos cuadras (go straight two blocks). You can use adelante or derecho because they both mean straight. Next izquierda means to go left and derecha means to go right. There is a big difference between derecho and derecha, because derecho means to go straight, and derecha means to go right. Some example sentences are; siga derecho en salem calle y doble a la derecha en la avenida (go straight on salem street and turn left on the avenue). Doble means to turn.
