To begin the week, we reviewed the uses of por and para. After, we began on demonstrative adjectives, otherwise known as adverbs of place. In English, the words are literally translated as that (ese, and esa), or those (esos and esas). Also in spanish, the word aquel(la) is used to say that, but referring to something farther away. Finally, the words aquí and acá are used to say here, and allí and allá are used to say there.
For example:
• Esas camisas son más bonita de aquellas camisas.
• Los pantalones aquí son muy flojos, pero aquellos son muy apretados.

After completing the demonstrative adjectives section, we began to work on using adjectives as nouns. Adjectives as nouns are used to avoid repeating a noun, therefore, use the article, followed by an adjective. Also, to avoid repeating a noun, use a demonstrative pronoun (éste, ése, aquél) with an accent on the stressed syllable.
For example:
• Este camisa no hace juego con aquéllas pantalones.
• El sombrero de cuero es muy feo, pero el de lana es muy bonito.

Demonstrative Adjectives; Adverbs of Place

-To point out a person or a thing that is even farther away from a speaker, use a form of aquel.
-There are four demonstrative adjectives: this, that, these, and those. Once you know the singular forms (this and that), the plural forms (these and those) are easy to remember.

Masculine: This=este, that=ese, these=estos, those=esos, that (farther away)=aquel, those (farther away)=aquellos

Feminine: this=esta, that=esa, these=estas, those=esas, that (farther away)=aquella, those (farther away)=aquellas.

Me gusta aquella tienda porque tiene muchos descuentos.
-I like that store because it has many discounts.

Ese collar es bonitísimo, pero aquel collar es feísimo.
-That necklace is very pretty, but that necklace (farther away) is very ugly.

Esta blusa no hace juego con aquellos pantalones.
-This blouse does not go with those (farther away) pants.

-Aquel can also be used to refer to the distant past (in those days).

En aquel entonces, no mirábamos television.
-Back then, we didn’t watch televisión.

En aquellos años, no teníamos videojuegos.
-In those years, we didnt have videogames.

En aquellos días, jugábamos pilla-pilla.
-In those days, we played tag.

-Furthermore, the adverbs aquí/acá (here) and allí/allá (there) are also used to point out where someone or something is. Aquí and allí point out a precise place.

-¡Ven aquí!
Come (right) here!

-En Texas, las personas no tienen dietas balanceadas. Allí se come mucha comida rapida.
In Texas, the people don’t have balanced diets. They eat a lot of fast food there.

-¿En Russia? Claro que muchas personas allá.
In the Russia? I think there are many people there.

-¡Ven acá!
Come over here!

Adjectives as Nouns

-To avoid repeating a noun, you can use an article followed by an adjective. The article and adjective phrase acts as the noun, and it agrees in gender and number with the noun it describes.

¿Compraste las cadenas de oro?....No, compré las de plata.
-Did you buy the gold bracelets?...No, I bought the silver ones.

¿Prefieres libros de horror?...No, prefiero los de románticas.
-Do you prefer horror books?....No, I prefer romantic ones.

-La cesta de paja es la más de bonita.
The straw basket is the prettiest one.

-You can also use a demonstrative pronoun, which needs an accent mark on the stressed syllable in this case (éste, ése, aquél), to avoid repeating a noun. It agrees with the noun it stands for.

-Este vestido cuesta menos que aquél.
This dress costs less than that one.

-Me gusta esta pulsera más que ésa.
I like this bracelet more than that one.

-Esta cesta grande es más bonita que aquélla.
This big basket is prettier than that one.

• Aquel can also be used to refer to the distant past, as in those days
 Example: En aquel entonces (aquellos años, aquellos días), había menos tiendas en el centro.
• The adverbs aquí/acá (here) and allí/allá (there) are also used to point out where someone or something is. Use aquí and allí to point out a precise place
 Example: ¡Ven aquí!- come (right) here!
 Example: ¡Ven acá!- come over here!
 Example: ¿En Chile? Claro que hablan español allá.

Adjectives as Nouns

• To avoid repeating a noun, you can use an article followed by an adjective. The article + adjective phrase acts as a noun and agrees in gender and number with the noun it describes.
 Example: Este sombrero cuesta más que aquél.
 Example: ¿Cuál, el de paja?
 Example: No, éste aquí, porque es de cuero.

Just like you can say “this” (or those) by using a form of este, you can say “that” by using a form of ese. The feminine form of ese is esa and the plural forms are esos and esas:
Ese sombrero es muy flojo.
Esos libros son muy buenos.
Esa lampera es brillante.

To point out something father away, you use a form of aquel. Aquella is the singular feminine form and aquellos and aquellas are the plural forms:
Aquel sombrero es muy flojo.
Aquellos libros son muy buenos.
Aquella lampera es brillante.

Aquel can also refer to the past:
En aquellos días yo jugaba fútbol.-In those days I was playing football.
En aquella mesa yo estaba triste.
En aquellos años yo estaba en el colegio.

The adverbs aquí/acá (here) and allí/allá (there) can also point out where something or someone is. Aquí and allí point out a precise place also:
La agua es acá- The water is (right) here.
Jimmy es allí- Jimmy is over there.
Ven aquí- Come (right) here.

To avoid repeating a noun over and over again, you can just repeat the article with the adjective phrase. It is better shown than explained:
El perro café es el menos guapo.- The brown dog is the least handsome (one).
Las películas horror son las más triste. Horror movies are the (most sad) saddest (ones).
No, prefiero las de romántico.- No, I prefer romantic ones.
