Spanish Blog

This week in Spanish, we learned a lot of things that mostly surround chores. We learned a lot of nouns, about saying what needs to be done, to describe a house, about ser and estar, and about some expressions that can be followed by an infinitive. The first thing we learned about was the different nouns that have to do with a person’s house.
Here are some of the nouns we learned:
• El Cuardo – Painting
• La Alfombra – Carpet
• La Pared – Wall
• El Piso – Floor
• El Techo – Ceiling
• El Estante – Book Case
• El Televisor – Television
• El Lavabo – Sink
• El Inodoro – Toilet
• La Estufa – Stove
• La Secadora – Drying Machine
• La Lavadora – Washing Machine

The next thing that we learned about was how to describe a house and some phases about how to say where something is compared to something else. Here are some questions about asking to describe a house:
• ¿Me dices dónde está el baño? – Can you tell me where your bathroom is?
• Descríbeme tu habitación – Describe your room to me.

Here are some ways to say where something is:
• A la derecha – to the right of
• A la izquierda – to the left of
• Entre – in between

Examples:
• El televisor esta a la derecha de la lámpara.
• El estante esta a la izquierda de la cama.
• La cama esta entre el estante y el televisor.

The next thing that we learned about was how to say what needs to be done and how to complain.
Here are some phrases about how to say what needs to be done:
• Hay que – you’ve got to
• Deber – you should/ ought to
• Hacer el favor de – please
• Tener que – you have to

Here are some ways to complain:
• ¡ Ay, que pesado! – Oh, what a drag!
• Estoy harto – to be fed up
• ¡No es justo! – It’s not fair!

Examples:
• Pablo, hay que limpiar la sala.
• Debes sacar la basura.
• Haz el favor de regar las plantas.
• Tienes que lavar los platos.

The next thing we learned about was ser and estar:

Ser:
• Where a class or an event takes place
• Describe characteristics of someone or something
• Nationality or where someone is from

Examples:
• La clase es en el gimnasio hoy.
• Juan es muy fuerte.
• Paco es de Mexico.

Estar:
• What is going on right now
• Where someone or something is
• Say how someone feels or food tastes

Examples:
• Pablo esta comiendo en la cocina.
• Los libros estan en la clase.
• Isabella esta muy contento hoy.

The last thing that we learned about this week was expressions that are followed by infinitives:
• Use deber, tener que, and me, te, etc, + toca with an infinitive to say what someone has to do.

Examples:
• Debes sacar la basura hoy.
• Tienen que limpiar la sala.
• No te tocas sacudir el televisor.

Use hay que, hacer el favor de, and favor de with and infinitive to say what has to be done:

Examples:
• Hay que regar las plantas.
• Haz el favor de darle de comer al perro.
• Favor de no lavar la ropa.
