Español 2- El Diario del 14-Dec-2009 a 18-Dec-2009

This will be your last blog post for the first semester. For this week, please explain both formal and informal commands-the 3 grammar sections of the second half of chapter 3. Please explain this concept in great detail. Explain how to form each command (informal affirmative and negative, Ud. and Uds.), list all irregular commands, AND include AT LEAST 3 ORIGINAL EXAMPLE SENTENCES FOR EACH TYPE OF COMMAND (THAT'S 12 SENTENCES TOTAL). You may include examples from the text also, but you must have 12 original sentences in order to receive full credit.

So that you may focus on preparing for the final exam over the weekend, please submit this entry by 11:30 pm on Wednesday, December 16th. Any posts received later than that will be graded as a late assignment for half credit.

This week in Spanish, we reviewed informal commands, before we looked at the new subject, formal commands. To make a formal command, you to the yo form of all verbs, drop the –o, and if it’s an –ar verb, add an e, or if it’s an –er or –ir verb, add an a. If you are making a command to more than one person, simply add an –n to the end of the verb. There are also many irregular verbs when giving formal commands. Any verb that ends in –car, -gar, or –zar is automatically irregular. –car, changes to qu, -gar, changes to –gu, and zar, changes to c. Some other irregular verbs are recojer, seguir, dar, ir, and ser. Recojer changes to recoja, or no recoja. Seguir changes to siga or no siga. Dar, changes to dé, or no den, ir, changes to vaya or no vayan, and ser changes to sea or no sean.

We also reviewed giving directions. These are the directions from Cabrini, to my house:

This week in class, we learned about formal and informal and irregular commands. They are directed to tú, usted, and ustedes. Also pronoun placement in the commands.
There are two kinds of informal commands: affirmative and negative.

Example commands include:
Sigue derecho dos cuadras.

·Seguir- sigo- no sigas
·Bajar- bajo- no bajes

Example commands:

There are three different types of “you” that relate to informal commands. Those three forms are tu, usted, and ustedes.
To form an affirmative informal command, you would go to the tu form, then drop the “s”.
Ex 1.) bajas- baja
Ex 2.) segues – sigue
Ex 3.) subes – sube
To form a negative informal command you go to the yo form, then drop the “o” and add “es” for “ar” verbs, and if the verb is a “er/ir” verb then you would ass “as.”
Ex 1.) no bajes
Ex.) no sigas
Ex 3.) no subas
Some irregular formal commands are;
Dar – de, no des
Decir – di, no digas
Poner – pon, no pongas
Salir – sal, no salgas
Ser – se, no seas
Tener – ten, no tengas
Vernir – ven, no vegas
To make a informal commend become “ustedes” form just add a “n” to the end of the verb.
Ex.1) de – den
Ex 2.) vaya – voyan
Ex 3.) sea – sean

In Spanish class this week, we learned about all the different forms of commands. These types are Formal and Informal Commands and Irregular Formal commands.

Formal Commands
When telling someone who you address as usted, you use formal commands. To create a formal command, first place the verb in its ‘yo’ form. If the verb ends in ar, drop the o of the ‘yo’ form and add e. If the verbs ends in ir and er, drop the o of the ‘yo’ form and add a.

Examples:
Bajar- baje & no baje
Comprar- compre & no compre
Comer- coma & no coma
Caminar- camine & no camine
Salir- salga & no salga
Tomar- tome & no tome

Sentences:
Camine el perro. – Walk the dog.
Compre la camiseta. – Buy the shirt.
No coma el pan. – Don’t eat the cake.

You can also used formal commands when addressing people as ustedes. The same rules apply as above but all verbs must have a ‘n’ added to the end of the verb.

Examples:
Bajar-bajen & no bajen
Comprar-compren & no compren
Comer- coman & no coman
Caminar- caminen & no caminen
Salir- salgan & no salgan
Tomar- tomen & no tomen

Sentences:
No salgan la casa hasta yo regresar. – Don’t leave the house until I return.
Tomen un taxi al centro commercial. – Take a taxi to the mall.
Bajen la avenida. – Walk down the street.

Verbs ending in car, gar, zar, ger, and guir have spelling changes in their formal command forms.

Sacar- saque or saquen & no saque or no saquen
Llegar- llegue or lleguen & no llegue or no lleguen
Organizar- orgnanice or organicen & no organice or no organicen
Recoger- recoja or recojan & no recoja or no recojan
Seguir (i)- siga or sigan & no siga or no sigan

Examples:
Saquen la tarea. – (You all) Take out the homework.
Llegue a la escuela temprano. – (You) Arrive to school early.
Organice los libros. – (You) Organize the books.

Informal Commands *Tù*
Affirmative – put the verb in its ‘tù’ form and drop the ‘s’
Negative- put the verb in its ‘yo’ form, drop the ‘o’, and add as for er and ir verbs or es for ar verbs.

Examples:
Bajar-baja-no bajes
Seguir(i)-sigue-no sigas
Subir-sube-no subas
Recoger-recoje-no recojas

Irregular verbs
Dar-da-no des
Decir-di-no digas
Hacer-haz-no hagas
Ir-va-no vayas
Poner-pon-no pongas
Salir-sal-no seas
Ser-sè-no seas
Tener-ten-no tengas
Venir-ven-no vengas.

Also something to know is that in the negative command of irregular verbs the ‘c’ changes to ‘qu’, the ‘g’ changes to ‘gu’, and the ‘z’ changes to ‘c’.

First, we reviewed informal commands.

An informal command is addressing a tú.
To form an affirmative informal command (telling someone what to do) you first go to the tú form of the verb in present tense. Then, you drop the S.

Examples:

Bajar → Baja
Seguir(e→i) → sige
Subir → Sube

Alejandro, compra los venduras, por favor.

To form a negative informal command (telling someone what not to do) you first go to the yo form of the verb, then drop the O. For ar verbs, you add es, and for er/ir verbs, you add as. (** Don’t forget to add the no!)

Examples:
No bajar → no bajes
No seguir (e→i) → no sigas
No subir → no subas

¡Maria, no grites en el colegio!

Irregular Informal Commands

Affirmative Negative
Dar: Da No des
Decir: Di No digas
Hacer: Haz No hagas
Ir: Ve No vayas
Poner: Pon No pongas
Salir: Sal No salgas
Ser: Sé No seas
Tener: Ten No tengas
Venir: Ven No vengas

***Don’t forget the stem changes in the irregularities!

Also, for car, gar, and zar verbs, don’t forget the spelling change.

Car
C→qu
Gar
G→gu
Zar
Z→c

Next, we learned about formal commands.

Formal commands address a usted or ustedes.
To form affirmative formal commands as well as negative formal commands, go to the yo form, drop the o. Then, for ar verbs add E (for usted) or EN (for ustedes). For er/ir verbs, add A (for used) or AN (for ustedes)

(You use formal commands a lot in giving directions*)

Examples:

Bajar → Baje Bajen
Seguir(e→i) → Seiga Sigan
Subir → Suba Suban

Niños, limpien la cocina.

Lven el carro, por favor.

Sacudan los muebles.

No fume en la biblioteca.

Irregular formal commands

Ud Ustedes
Dar: (no) dé (no) den
Ser: (no) sea (no) sean
Ir: (no) vaya (no) vayan

Directions to my house from Cabrini:

Salga Cabrini. Doble a la izquierda en la calle Wick. Suba la calle Wick hasta llegar la calle Reeck. Doble a la izquierda en la calle Reeck. Suba dos milles hasta llegar la calle Northline. Doble a la izquierda. Siga adelente hasta llegar la calle Greenwich. Doble a la izquierda y suba dos cuadras. Mi casa está a la derecha.

Finally, we learned about commands with pronouns.

This would happen with reflexive verbs, direct object pronouns or indirect object pronounds.

You can attach the pronoun to the end of affirmative commands.

Examples:

Levántense.
Sáquela.

The pronoun goes before the verb and after the no for negative commands.

No la saques.

No se levanten.

No la compre.
